The Importance Of The Teacher Librarian by Judy O’Connell Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic License
I believe an effective Teacher Librarian takes on a plethora of roles that allow them to best support and enhance the teaching and learning that takes place in the school environment in which they work. Just three of these roles include:
Leadership
Effective Teacher Librarians support the school curriculum by making the library and library staff excellent sources of information, services and learning. I believe Teacher Librarians must make it their mission to become actively involved in engaging all members of the school community, helping them use the information services available, and become involved in curriculum planning so they are best positioned to tailor the library services to the school’s needs.
Information Literacy
Effective Teacher Librarians have a wealth if knowledge and understanding of, and training in, information services and I believe it is their role to share their knowledge and understanding to help members of the school community access information. The graphic below is a visual metaphor I think reflects how daunting it can be to access information services without the relevant information literacy with which to navigate them.
Learning Environment Manager
Effective Teacher Librarians create, and continually develop, learning environments replete with resources that meet the needs of teachers, students, and the curriculum. I believe these learning environments need to be stimulating, well organised, and connected to information services, learning environments, and contexts outside the school.
